Zingapoor: "If this concert is from Biel, then the venue most probably was the infamous "Gaskessel", the only place in town where such a concert could be held back in 1983."

Sunday, 17 April 1983 The Rathskeller, Boston, Massachusetts
No tape exists? This was an afternoon all-ages gig. Tempo House played during the soundcheck.
According to Simon Ford's book (p. 116), after the gig the band went to a local bar for drinks and Kay Carroll, the Fall's manager since late 1977, was refused service. She wanted to go to a different bar, but Mark wanted to stay. When the band got on the minibus for Montreal, Kay decided not to accompany them, and severed all ties with the band from that moment. She eventually moved to Hoboken, New Jersey and now lives in Portland, Oregon.
Steve G. wrote in to correct the above. It turns out that the split between Mark and Kay happened the next day, 18 April, sometime after lunch, since Steve had met Mark and Kay at a sandwich shop on Huntington Avenue in Jamaica Plain (a Boston neighborhood a few miles from the Rat) that day. Kay stayed on in Boston for a while and considered moving into the basement of the building Steve was living in at the time, but in the end chose not to.

Edward: "The following day the gig was noticed in the Ottawa Citizen (our local daily) under Evelyn Erskine's 'Nights Out' column. She seems to have felt roundly ticked off by it: 'The capacity crowd was forced to wait
around until midnight when The Fall chose to grace them with its
presence. Over a half hour after it was due to perform, three of its
members were nowhere to be found.' Erskine provides no particulars of
the performance itself.
"It was the only time I saw The Fall play live. This is what I recall of
the gig:
(a) the band were tight, a lot more than I expected;
(b) I thought I was a pretty up-to-date Fall fan, but the set was more
or less completely unfamiliar to me, and MES didn't help us out by
introducing any of the songs;
(c) he was wearing a baggy acrylic sweater in some unnaturally bright
variety of blue, I think. It was so uncool as to be positively
impressive.
"On my way back from the library, where I got that Citizen quote, I
stopped by what used to be the Roxy and had a look inside. I would
guess 'capacity crowd' means something over 100.
I know of no tapes of the event; I regret that I have no memorabilia of
it."

Excellent soundboard recording released on Voiceprint in 2001, sadly missing Ludd Gang and Wings.
Opinions on the Austurbæjarbíó CD vary, from Required Fields's:
"Just received Austurbæjarbíó this week and it's fucking great!!! I love In A Hole and Totale's but this one's a real contender for best live album. I was stunned by the quality of performance and recording therein."
to David's:
"I nominate the Reykjavik 83 CD as the worst-sounding 'live' album ... it is the most lifeless live album by anyone ever, the sound is teeth-gratingly arid, no atmosphere, no ambience, no energy, no buzz, no oomph, just cannon-fire drums and what sounds like a performance by the living dead. Never been able to play it all the way through. It's 'good quality' in terms of no hiss or audience noise etc, but it's like a night in a bloody morgue ... ugh! This isn't what music should be like!!"

Tim: "Myself, a mate called David, and his girlfriend attended this gig. At first we couldn’t find our way inside and a few members of The Fall, viewed through the building’s rear window, pointed us in the right direction. There were two support bands I remember. One being Serious Drinking: a kind of fringe rock’n’roll indie band who wore matching blue flat caps, and another mob called Shadow Planet, who were a bit more gothic punk. I enjoyed Shadow Planet’s set more, but the audience was somewhat apathetic towards them. During Serious Drinking’s performance, a group of Skinheads started mouthing off and doing Nazi salutes, to which their lead singer retorted: “we have always been an anti-Fascist band” - which gained the approval of the audience. When The Fall appeared, Brix Smith also came on stage with them - it was the first time I had seen her, or knew of her existence. I have the feeling she might have not been on stage the whole time though. During Mere Psued Mag Ed (I think it was) some idiot threw a full pint glass of lager onto Mark E. Smith from a distance of just a few feet. I’m surprised nobody hit the guy. Poor M.E.S. was instantly soaked, he stopped singing, and for a minute just stood there motionless blinking in utter disgust; the band kept on playing the tune regardless, then Mark grabbed a towel and started wiping clean a nearby keyboard which he probably feared would break if it remained wet. The cleaning of the keys caused a discordant howl above and beneath which Mere Psued Mag Ed continued: wordless and unabated. I also remember it was the first time I ever heard C.R.E.E.P., and I was quite taken with it at the time. At the end of the concert, during Totally Wired, the aforementioned skinheads invaded the stage and started doing the cancan (for some reason) to which the audience screamed “f*** off” and such like. I am sure The Fall hated the gig for all the agro, but it was certainly memorable and musically they seemed well on form."
