early October 1986 Ipswich
No tape exists? A "rehearsal" gig for the new keyboard player, Marcia Schofield. Mark had lent her a copy of Bend Sinister a couple of days before. "It was packed and I had to walk onstage with all these scraps of paper with notes written down. The sound-check was the first time I'd played with these guys! Terrifying! For the encore they did two songs I'd never even heard before! Talk about baptism by fire. Mark always said, 'That was your best gig with us.' " (Bitch Mental #1, February 1990)

"An almighty, authoritative power grips a remarkable cross-section of age, race, sex and style, all of whom wait, ensnared, for an answer to the appeal. Smith merely yelps, sneers and leers. He crouches, microphone locked between his knees, giving nothing away. It is an arrogant presence, completely dismissive of his audience. There is no obligation to say something that might sum it all up. ... I love them because they’re awkward, they’re unorthodox, and they’re obnoxiously defiant. The thrill of disorder stops with The Fall, its most bizarre champions." (Will Smith, "The Fall: Walthamstow Town Hall, London", Melody Maker, 15 November 1986, p. 19)

Tim Jauncey: Can't remember all the set, but know it definitely included Shoulder Pads / Guest Informant / U.S. 80s-90s / Living too Late / Mr. Pharmacist / Hot Aftershave Bop / R.O.D. / Hey! Luciani / Lucifer over Lancashire / Gross Chapel-GB Grenadiers. Encore was Bournemouth Runner.
Interesting anecdote here was that the support band, The Beloved, had their 6-string bass nicked at Brighton the night before (they didn't own a 4-string), and they used Steve Hanley's bass to play their set, having to select only songs that didn't contain any high bass notes !!
