From our guestbook: "I mostly loathe the Fall. I put on the Birmingham Uni gig supporting the Cramps and later at the Cedar Club. It always annoyed me how Mark Smith complained about the price of tickets when he charged more than anyone else. Honestly it was a dirge. I mean in that era groups didn't need talent - a bit of style, passion or pastiche went a long way, even a good tune. All the Fall had was a grudge. I remember when at the Cedar Club he came off & the audience of male raincoats hollered for an encore, I was behind the bar with the £400 ranting ..'Yes...more depressing, tuneless, worthless' etc when I looked up and there he was, staring at me, a look of horror on his face. (The 'waiting for your encore' place meant hiding behind the bar). I was so embarrassed I gave the money to the doorman and went home. The Cramps though, they were the real thing..."

The university SU had the use of it on Saturdays which they (and hardly anyone else) named "The Downtown Kampus". My memory is that The Fall were brief but went down a storm. There were somepretty decent photos taken - live and also a posed group shot in the train station - I was doing a fanzine at the time. Photographer was Ciaran O Tuama."

Ian: My favourite Fall moment was from the very first time I saw them at Manchester Poly in 1980. Someone in the crowd lobbed a beer can up and hit MES with it. MES didn't blink and carried on the song without pausing. At the end of the song he went over to Hanley and Scanlon who pointed out somebody in the crowd about half way back. MES shouts you fucking ugly twat and walks off stage reappearing a minute later in the crowd striding over to the can lobber and smacking him one in the face. A magic moment.
